Joey Votto continues to torment opposing pitchers with his sweet swing and is one of the main reasons the Cincinatti Reds are contending to win the N.L. Central with their rival St. Louis Cardinals. Votto’s outstanding season certainly puts him in MVP contention, as he ranks among N.L. leaders in batting average, home runs and RBIs. Some of his cards that have been on the rise the past couple months include his 2002 Bowman Chrome Draft #44 jumping from $15 to $20. His 2002 Topps 206 #429 has more than doubled from $8 to $20 and his 2007 Bowman Sterling Prospect Autograph #JV jumps from $30 to $45. His 2008 SP Authentic Jersey Autograph #137 rose from $35 to $45 and his 2008 SPX Autograph #109 moves up from $40 to $50.
The National League Rookie of the Year race has been one of the most interesting in a long time. At the start of the season, it seemed Jason Heyward might run away with the award, and although he has been impressive he’s had some struggles and injuries along the way. The Chicago Cubs have a couple rookies that are contending as Starlin Castro and Tyler Colvin have been impressive. Castro’s most desirable cards includes his 2009 Bowman Chrome Prospects #183 at $10. Colvin’s 2006 Bowman Sterling Prospect Autograph #TC has jumped from $15 to $35 since the start of the season. Everyone should be aware of Stephen Strasburg by now, but an injury slowed him down and a innings cap makes him a longshot for N.L. ROY. Buster Posey may not get the headlines, but is the most deserving right now. He’s become one of the Giants most reliable hitters in the middle of a pennant race no less. His top cards have been on a steady rise since his call-up, as his 2008 Bowman Chrome Draft Prospects Auto #128 has doubled since the start of the season from $50 to $100. His 2008 Bowman Sterling Prospects Auto #BP jumped from $50 to $60 this month.
In the football market, Kevin Kolb and Chad Henne are getting extra attention from collectors. As far as 2010 rookies go, many are chasing Tebow and Bradford but for impact this season check out Ryan Matthews, the clear-cut starter for the Chargers. Also keep an eye on Jahvid Best, Dez Bryant, Ben Tate, C.J. Spiller and Montario Hardesty.
