Pittsburgh Penguins rookie Evgeni Malkin’s NHL debut was delayed almost two weeks due to a shoulder injury, but since playing in his first game Oct. 18, he has done nothing to dampen the anticipation of hockey card collectors for his first rookie cards.
Malkin scored a goal in his first game, and has scored in every game since, becoming the first NHL player since 1917-18 to begin his NHL career with goals in each of his first six games. Malkin scored two goals, including the game-winner, in Pittsburgh’s victory at Los Angeles on Wednesday.
Upper Deck’s Don Williams said the company had hoped to include Malkin’s first “live” (non-redemption) rookie card in its first series of Upper Deck Hockey for this season, but his belated debut did not allow that to happen. Williams said Black Diamond Hockey, which will go live the first week of December, will now be the first product to feature a card of Malkin in his Penguins’ uniform.
