Steiner aims to take advantage of Mitchell report list, then changes directions

It’s anticipated that some baseball fans will be upset to hear the estimated 60-80 names released today as part of the Mitchell report’s investigation into the use of performance-enhancing drugs in Major League Baseball. Steiner Sports, however, is hoping to put a positive spin on some of that negative publicity. Between 7 p.m. and midnight (Eastern) tonight, anyone who purchases a baseball from SteinerSports.com that’s autographed by a player named in the report will receive a $50 online gift certificate.

After the initial response to the offer wasn’t received well in the public, Steiner quickly ended the promotion and offered the following apology:

“Steiner Sports would like to offer its sincerest apologies to those who were offended by our George Mitchell e-mail special that was sent out last night. The investigation into performance-enhancing drugs in Major League Baseball is a serious matter that we fully support. The special that was announced is now expired but we will honor the offer to those of you who chose to participate.”
