Hunt Auctions, a sports memorabilia auction company and the official auctioneer of Major League Baseball’s DHL All-Star FanFest, sold a jacket worn by Lou Gehrig the day he took himself out of the lineup and ended his streak in 1939 for a record $373,750 at the 2008 MLB Live Auction at DHL All-Star FanFest. More than 975 items, including the personal collections of Yankees greats Whitey Ford and Thurman Munson, were sold during a two-day auction July 14-15 at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City.
Other items sold during today, day two of the auction, include Babe Ruth’s Historic 712th home run autographed baseball ($172,500), Tony Lazzeri’s 1928 New York Yankees World Series ring ($48,875), and a Jackie Robinson game-used bat ($92,000).
Hall of Fame Yankees Pitcher Whitey Ford’s personal collection of several hundred pieces was offered Tuesday. Featured items included his 1961 World Series Babe Ruth Most Valuable Player Award ($50,600), 1950 New York Yankees rookie road jersey ($50,600), a President John F. Kennedy autographed baseball signed to Whitey Ford ($29,900), Whitey Ford signed game-used glove ($17,250), and Whitey’s personal Hall of Fame Induction plaque ($9,200).
On July 14, Hunt Auctions set a record for a game-worn hat. Babe Ruth’s New York Yankees professional model hat c.1920s-30s sold for $327,750. Another significant Babe Ruth item featured was a professional model baseball bat signed to Broadway starlet Tessa Kosta c.1924 which sold for $195,500.
The personal collection of the late Yankees catcher, Thurman Munson, was a highlight on Monday. Diana Munson, wife of the late Thurman Munson, was on hand to introduce the collection which included more than 150 items. One of the Munson family’s most cherished items was his 1978 World Series full-size captain’s trophy which sold for $207,000. Other featured items from his collection included his 1977 New York Yankees World Series ring ($143,750), 1976 American League Most Valuable Player Award ($126,500), 1978 New York Yankees World Series ring ($97,750), 1976 American League Championship ring ($86,250), 1979 New York Yankees home uniform ($86,250), and his 1970 Rookie of the Year Award ($46,000).
