Donruss will ship its fourth and final baseball release for the 2008 season – Playoff Contenders Baseball – on Feb. 4.
"This is something we have kicked around for years," Donruss brand manager Ben Ecklar said of the decision to offer Contenders as a baseball product. "As we expand our baseball offerings and look at what brands translate well in baseball, the timing was right to finally release Contenders in baseball."
The product will feature 50 unsigned base cards and 100 signed rookie cards, including the first certified autographs of third-base prospect Dayan Viciedo, the 19-year-old who signed a four-year, $10 million deal with the White Sox in November after defecting from Cuba. Other players in the product include 2008 first-round draft picks Buster Posey and Gordon Beckham and 2007 first-round pick Rick Porcello. Autographs from legendary names such as Pete Rose, Cal Ripken Jr. and Willie Mays will also be inserted. Donruss will also use the product to showcase the first Contenders basketball cards, with insert cards of OJ Mayo, Derrick Rose and Michael Beasley. Contenders Baseball will be sold in five-card packs, with each pack carrying a $6 SRP.
