SMP Sportscards of Grapevine, Texas, has been chosen as the winner of the NBA’s Hobby Shop Makeover promotion. As the grand prize winner, the store will receive a makeover from Michael Moloney, one of the designers from the popular TV show “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.”
The store collected more than 61,000 wrappers of NBA-licensed trading cards from consumers, more than the other 35 participating hobby shops from around the country. During the promotion, the store reported its basketball card sales increased 250 percent. “My business started in the back of a gas station more than 20 years ago, so winning the promotion is one of the biggest highlights of my life,” said Scott Pierce, owner of SMP Sportscards.
Ten other stores around the country received a runner-up prize of an in-store NBA-themed party. Those winners are Big League Cards (Casselberry, Fla.), Cardworld Cards and Supplies (Glendale, Ariz.), dtLingo Sports (Wylie, Texas), Galaxy Stores (Naperville, Ill.), Matt’s Sports Cards (Joliet, Ill.), Mr. Dale’s Tradin’ Cards (Eaton Rapids, Mich.), Republic Collectibles (Auburn, Maine), The Bullpen (Hendersonville, N.C.), The Stadium (Bay City, Mich.), and What’s On Second (San Antonio).
“The promotion has generated a tremendous response from the trading card industry and has had a positive impact on sales in hobby shops across the country,” said Lisa Goldberg, the NBA’s senior director of trading card licensing. “We are thrilled with the results and are looking forward to working with Michael Moloney to bring his design expertise to SMP Sportscards.”
Meanwhile, Travis Thompson of Sammamish, Wash., was the winner of the consumer portion of the sweepstakes. He entered at DJ’s Sports Cards in Renton, Wash. Thompson won a trip for two to the 2007 NBA Rookie Photo Shoot in New York City.
