Charles White’s 1979 Heisman Trophy statue will be the headline item in Mastro Auctions’ Dec. 8 live event at The Sports Museum of America in New York City. The museum is the new home of the Heisman Trophy.
Heisman Trophies rarely hit the auction circuit. The record price paid for a Heisman is $395,240, which was the sale price of the 1941 trophy presented to Minnesota’s Bruce Smith. Doug Allen, president and chief operating officer of Mastro Auctions, believes White’s trophy could approach the mid-six-figure range.”
The sale will feature two sessions. The first, titled “Legends of the Gridiron,” will take place on the morning of Dec. 8 and feature game-worn jerseys from hall of famers such as Jim Brown, Johnny Unitas, Joe Namath, Ray Nitschke and Tom Landry. It will also feature a jersey worn by Don Maynard in Super Bowl III. The second session, “Legends of the Diamond” will feature baseball memorabilia and take place in the afternoon.
